Filipinos were featured in DW-TV's Journal feature news (that German channel in cable) just a while ago. The report was about the booming industry of call centers here. Many were interviewed and I thought Germans watching the show would be astounded at how Filipinos are better speaker of English (with accent) than they do. Come to think we are third world. Hehe.
The featured call center was of Siemens (apparently owned by Germans).
I should have been proud: they were talking on how Philippines has been already the leader (and grows more) in call center industry and also on how this market could boost the country's economy on the global scene. And of course, why Philippines - low salaries, good English proficiencies.
But I'm not happy. In fact, I felt ashamed. And I couldn't put it into words. I know you know why.
They said the number of employees in call centers would jump from 250,000 to a million by 2010. At least I'm hopeful in assuring myself (and you too) that I won't add to the statistics.
Es gibt morgen ein helleres. (I used the translator. Hehe.)
