The Coconuter

It's been a while since I made a good long post.

Imagine yourself graduating ahead of your batch of 686 carrying some bagful of awards. Then, attend some University in pursuit of a Triple Degree while doing some IT work in NASA. Your parents should be very proud of you now and many are turning green in envy. And finally, drop. I mean, drop all of it and do some soul-searching in your faraway province in a third world country.

Are you nuts enough to do that? Well, someone is. The Coconuter just did that. He's like some Paulo Coelho who wants to know his very purpose in life. Just that. He's really inspiring. Believe my last sentence even though I view this whole idea as a joke. I think he'll write a book someday. You know, following the pattern. Do the bleak and share the experience. Haha!

Made me think again of those people with Nobel Prize minds. Big brains really don't bring you up there since big brains pull their host down. Big brains think the unthinkable and maybe impractical. Think of those Pisays who went rouge by dropping college (they say it's boring) or poisoning their batchmates. Think of the reason behind most murders committed in the US. It's because they think too much. They see reasons behind practicality and setting. (Now I can be a proud brother for a sister who's poor in Math. Haha. I'm just anxious that someday, I may commit murder too. Hahahaha.)

The only bad thing that I feel sorry about the nutter (quite) is his exposure to the Filipino media. He's been featured in Nagmamahal, Kapamilya (where I knew him. Yeah, I do watch those stuff. Out of boredom maybe.) recently and his blog link was squeezed in between. I visited it lately and was astounded by the heavy reaction of the people who managed to watch the feature. It was really funny! The commenting was at high. You've got to visit it. Some of which are:

kuya ang ganda ng palabas...congratz po!!

hmmpp... napanood poh kita sa kapamilya...hehehe...

helow poh...... can i have your cellphone number?...
plz......

Mysterious gal....
Hello David,
Nice site..sayang,noon pa sana tayo nagkita...too bad to know that you have a wife nah and you're soon to be father nah...i really like you...you're so cuttteeeee....hehehe...how old are u?me im 21......take care always...my number..09206087429
Hahaha! But it's still sad. The newspapers will come and visit him for sure. It's like de-virginizing the sleek body. And other religious stuff or maybe other soul-searching cheesy maniacs will be there and preach with him. Oh, he really should go away and live somewhere else. He should try Batanes. Hehe. He's so famous now that everything he'd want will turn to spoil due to mere exposure. He's now hot and sensational. Maybe he could try modelling. I really hate Filipino media and most Filipino's reaction to media.

BTW, Kate, he looks like Senador.

well, he censors the comments on his blog that's why you could only see "favorable" comments. what a pity that he is advertising his own bank account on his blog to earn money, that is just a pity for someone who has the skills and qualifications to be independent. he does not earn my respect, I see him as just a young man who found it difficult to fit in his new crowd and decided to go back to where he used to belong. and also it sounds irresponsible to me that while in the middle this "nomad" experience and uncertainty, he got a girl pregnant, not having a steady job to support the wife and the new baby. not too responsible in my opinion, for someone as intelligent, skilled and educated like him.

I've read those cheesy comments after he was featured on the show. Never thought he would censor them after.

You're right. At first I adored him - some sort of immediate reaction to me. But pondering over it for some time, I find him to be a "pretentious postmodernist". I mean, he does these and that to claim his uniqueness and fame. I saw this "catharsis video" and really made me think he just goes out for the prestige of what he does. And the nomad thing is like what he would write in a book that can make him famous. The wife, the baby, the holy week carrying of the cross (saw it on one of the pictures) are all props. It's like a stage drama.

I don't know about the bank account but if you're right, I would think that this whole setup is a "funded" tragic play with him as main character.

Well, I stand corrected on the censorship of the comments on his blog. It is actually not censorship but he only approves comments that suit his taste. Maybe to conceal them from his adoring fans, avoiding the fact that people might see him in a different light as I do. If you will read in the beginning of his posts, there was a commenter asking what his purpose in doing all of these, he got MAD, answered the commenter in a very looongg argumentative way telling the commenter that he is only doing the Philippines a favor of promoting it. It is just a shame that he is claiming that he only PROMOTES the Philippines. In what sense? I don't see it. To me, he is promoting HIMSELF in all of these. If you will look closer, he has this section in his blog that sells Philippine crafts and items. To which he claimed that it is part of promoting the Philippines. He earns from it, duh! And he is claiming it is just to promote the Phils? I dont know about that. Also, he left the US with almost nothing in his pocket, quit college, quit his work here, quit his chance to save up for his own "nomad" adventure, very irresponsible if you will ask me. He could have saved for all of these and save the public from "funding" his adventures thru donations. Tell me, why does he deserve to get donations from me or from anyone else more than the other Filipinos who are not able, very poor, sick, physically or mentally challenged? Just because he said he quit his luxurious life here in the US and moved back to the Philippines? Just because he said he graduated Valedictorian from High School in the US? Just because people see him as more guwapo than the ordinary Filipinos? Just because he has education from Pearl University? All the more that he does not deserve a penny for donation because all of those prove that he is ABLE to support himself, if only he was not too impulsive and impatient of waiting for the right time to go back there, at least finish his college and get a job and save up money. Then go back and become adventurous.

To me, 3 dollars may mean nothing here. He said in his blog that his daily expense amounts to 3 dollars, so he is asking from some kind hearts to make donations for him. Why I should donate my 3 dollars for him and not for that old man he goes to the mountains with? Or for any other hungry child in the slums? If you do the math, if a hundred readers will donate 3 dollars for him in a month, how much will that be? Is this what he is claiming that he is promoting the Philippines? For the world to see that Filipinos beg for something to put in their mouths, that Filipinos are poor because they are irresponsible? He had all the chance to be progressive, but his impulsiveness made him turn himself into something he is now. Was he so deprived of attention here in the US that he missed so much that province where he used to be, where he got all the happy childhood memories that he speaks of and decided to go back? Did he miss all the attention he got there for being mestizo because in here, he is not even considered anything more than the ordinary. Yes, it is hard to fit in here. I can attest to that. But being here gave him the chance of becoming a man he could have been, with a little sacrifice (if he sees it to be a sacrifice to be away from his childhood memories). All of us should carry our own burden. Well, I dont know what goes in his mind. I can only speculate according to what I am seeing and reading. He could have earned my respect IF, like many Filipinos here in the US, did finish their education here, landed a job, earned money and saved, then go back to the Philippines and do some charity works or projects that could help our poor people to educate themselves on how to make money through craftmanships and all that and help them export those products abroad. Now, THAT is promoting the Philippines. But instead, he quit college, quit job (if he had a job at that time), quit all his chances, packed his suitcase, with a few hundred dollars in his pocket and a camera in his backpack, flew back to the Philippines, went to the mountains, blogged his adventures, met a girl, got the girl pregnant, appeared on TV and now, asks the public to help him finance his situation. Well, sounds like a good plan to me, for somebody who has the intelligence and all of what he is claiming to be.

But I think, aside from asking donations, aside from claiming he is dirt poor right now, he is really enjoying all the attention.

Woah! You really are a big contra to "The Coconuter" to post such a long statement against him. I haven't had a thorough reading of the blog though.

I viewed the blog a while ago and yes, you're right, he loves the fame this "adventure" is causing him. But this thing isn't adventure anymore. He doesn't do those things out of personal satisfaction or soul searching but out of the attention that is actively causing him. And I was heavily appalled that he really posted his bank account for donations. Why would he want donations if he's trying to live life here in the Philippines in the simplest way he could do it? Clearly, soul-searching is just a front for all of these.

At what exact post was that arguement posted on? I tried to search but failed. And maybe you could try having an email conversation with him. At least he'll know and we can have some light about his side. That is if he won't be pissed off - he'll think we just envy him or whatever nonsense and illogical reply.

I tend to neglect issues that doesn't concern me and my place in the community or whatever. He doesn't do bad against me so why should I care? Hehe. Call me ignorant or insensitive but he could argue that. The thought of him will just ruin our day so why bother? The bad thing is this play is luring more and more fans into him. Like some fake God.

And hey, thanks for commenting. I wonder how many people I never get acquainted to or even met read this blog. Haha.

I'm not a big anti-coconuter, Leo. I just hate people who are craving for attention and drag along our ignorant and fanatic people to their selfish cause. Dont you think, too, the fanatism is in Filipino culture?

It should be in one of his earliest posts, upon arriving in PI. Well, if you could not find it, maybe he deleted the "unwanted" comments, right?

I wonder about that bank account he post for donations. Is that a modern way of begging! Im sure he's fit enough to earn his own money. With his intellegent and skills that he boasting of he can find a job easily and finance his own travel.

That's my point, anonymous#2. Yep, it was a different person from the first anonymous commenter, which is me :) Just in case some readers might think that it is just one and the same person manipulating the comments :)

Wooot. Really now. Hahaha. I'm not really interested with the identities of anonymous readers of my blog since asking who they are would just make them love their newfound mystery. But can you please use names instead? Why go into anonymity? I don't get the sense.

And get over the coconuter. There's more to life. Hahahaha.
